Planning a Tanzania Honeymoon Safari: What to Know Before You Go

A Tanzania honeymoon safari means waking up to hippos grunting outside your tent, watching the sun drop behind an acacia tree with a drink in hand, and spending your days somewhere that feels genuinely far from everything. It's one of the most popular ways couples choose to start married life, and for good reason: nowhere else pairs that sense of romance with this much wildlife.
If you're at the early planning stage, here's what actually matters.
How long should a Tanzania honeymoon safari be?
Ten to fourteen days is the sweet spot for most couples. That's enough time to combine three or four safari destinations with a few days on Zanzibar's beaches at the end, without the trip feeling rushed. Shorter trips of five or six days work too, but you'll likely stick to one or two regions — usually the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater — rather than getting the full contrast of Tanzania's parks.
Which camps suit a honeymoon in Tanzania?
Look for smaller camps and boutique lodges with six to twelve tents rather than large hotels. They tend to have more privacy and offer a more intimate setting. The partners we work with include honeymoon touches such as a private plunge pool, an outdoor bathtub, a bush dinner set up under the stars. Camps and lodges situated in prime areas with breathtaking views or along wildlife corridors offer the opportunity to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your balcony.
What should a typical honeymoon itinerary look like?
A well-paced honeymoon itinerary moves through two or three parks, spending two to three nights in each so you're not packing and unpacking every day and there is time for slow mornings and as well as retutning to the lodge for a cooked lunch. A common route runs Tarangire, then Ngorongoro Crater, then the Serengeti, finishing with several nights on the beach in Zanzibar. Tarangire is worth including even though it's less famous — it has some of the highest elephant density in Tanzania. If time permits, we recommend a 2 night stay in Arusha and walking safari in Arusha National Park to ease into safari mode and recover from a lengthy flight.
Is it worth combining a honeymoon safari with Zanzibar?
Almost every honeymooning couple does, and it works well. After several days of early starts and dusty roads, a few nights on Zanzibar's east coast is the right way to close out the trip — white sand, warm water, and nothing to do but rest. We usually suggest four to five nights there at the end, not the start, so the safari still has your full energy. There are properties to suit everyone's idea of the perfect romantic getaway and budget. From ocean front villas with private pools to all inclusive resorts, there is something to suit everyone's idea of the perfect honeymoon.
What does a honeymoon cost, roughly?
A ten to fourteen night honeymoon safari, including Zanzibar, generally starts from around USD $8,000–$10,000 per couple for well-run mid-range camps, and moves upward from there depending on the properties and time of year. A premium luxury safari starts from USD $15,000 per couple. At this end of the luxury scale, there are significant savings to be had in the low season from April to May for those looking at a premium experience without the price tag.
